Office vs colocation: annual running cost
Estimate what a server costs to run where it is now, including the extra energy your air-conditioning uses to remove its heat. Then compare it with a Green Racks colocation tier.

kWh/year = W ÷ 1000 × hours/day × 365 × (1 + cooling%). Cost = kWh × tariff ÷ 100 (+ supply × 365). Colo = monthly tier price × 12. All dollar figures marked * are estimates or indicative prices. Colocation power allowances and inclusions are confirmed in a written quote. This calculator compares electricity cost only. It does not price the redundant UPS, cooling, fire suppression, physical security or your time that come with colocation.

Why include cooling overhead?
Almost every watt a server draws ends up as heat. If the room is air-conditioned, the air-conditioner uses extra energy to remove it. 30% is a starting assumption; set 0% if the room has no cooling (and expect the hardware to throttle).
Where do I find my tariff?
On your electricity bill, as the usage rate in cents per kWh. Business tariffs vary by retailer, state and plan, so the default of 40 c/kWh is only a starting point. Edit it.
What doesn't the calculator include?
It compares electricity cost only. It doesn't price the redundant UPS, cooling, fire suppression, physical security or staff time that come with colocation, or the cost of your own UPS and air-conditioning hardware.
